Humility: A Lost Art?

We have prided ourselves to live in a society of educated, sophisticated, and modern people. However, does it justify our rudeness, our unforgiving attitude, or our self-serving personality? Humility is a virtue that needed to be rediscovered in our lives. It needs to be cultivated if we desire to live peacefully and in accord with our community. How do we start?Humility -A Lost Art

  • We can start by being sensitive to others feelings and stature. To illustrate this point, I came across a story* about Professor Stuart Blackie of the University of Edinburg who,
many years ago, was listening to his students as they presented oral readings. When one young man rose to begin his recitation, he held his book in the wrong hand. The professor thundered, “Take your book in your right hand, and be seated!”

At this harsh rebuke, the student held up his right arm. He did not have a right hand! The other students shifted uneasily in their chairs. For a moment, the professor hesitated. The he made his way to the student, put his arm around him, and with tears streaming from his eyes, said, “I never knew about it. Please, will you forgive me?”
  • Next, by cultivating a forgiving attitude. Forgive and forget.

  • Lastly, by letting the needs of others take precedence before ours. I know this is quite hard. Believe me it is doable, and you will feel better. It has been said that the giver is always happier than the receiver is.
I wish you a good life!

  1. Forgive and forget--such powerful ability if you're capable but quite a challenge for all of us. We should be reminded 77 x 7, meaning, all our lives we should forgive and forget:) Thanks for your article, it's upbuilding:)
