An Alternative Approach Against Drug Addiction

Drug Addiction: Not a medical issue?
Some say that drug addiction is not a health or medical issue that can be analyzed clinically. IMO, this is true in some respect. Like, alcoholism, drug addiction is actually both a physiological and psychological problem. The risks of developing drug addiction in a person is bigger under some certain social and personal circumstances. Circumstances can be of different types, magnitude, and/or condition. Bad influences, family issues, career problems, and peer pressures can all be traced as roots to drug addictions, and alcoholism as well.

A physiological and psychological condition
Drug addiction is the condition or state, when drug users become drug dependent and they lose control of their cravings or needs for drugs. This dangerous habit becomes enslaving, and will eventually be deterrent to the victim’s emotional control, rational capacity, and decision-making abilities. There is no simplistic approach. Drug rehab is required. Competent and medically trained personnel should administer drug treatment on a periodic and consistent basis until full recovery is achieved. In some cases, intervention as an alternative to rehab proves to be effective, especially on the early stages of addiction. With the supervision and aid of trained medical personnel, friends and families can facilitate programs of intervention. Alcoholics who have undergone alcohol rehab, in most cases, have better and faster recovery when they have undergone this intervention process.

Community Activism: An Alternative Approach
Drug addiction and alcoholism both ranked high when determining causes of certain crimes, vehicular and freak accidents, broken marriages, child abuses, and suicides. These issues are actually community-based and can easily be addressed and prevented. Two practical and sensible ideas that can be considered:
  • A community should create an atmosphere where drug addiction and alcoholism are discouraged. It can be in a form of a community magna-carta. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, the old adage says. A community can assert a positive influence. This can easily be done in various ways of information dissemination.
  • A community should addressed issues of drug addiction and alcoholism with an open mind. An open mind would mean accepting an addict or an alcoholic as one who needs help, care, and personal attention. Intervention is best done when there is a supportive community that is willing to go on a limb to help an addict or an alcoholic recover.
I am hoping that more and more communities would take an active part in addressing these perennial issues.
