A New Year’s Resolution: Finding and Fixing Attitude Problems

Mistakes are often easy to identify. Therefore, we can correct them and take steps to prevent them from occurring again. An attitude problem, on the other hand, is more difficult to recognize –especially if it is your own. –Anonymous (actually, I don’t know where I got this. I wrote this on a Mc Donald’s burger wrapper. ^_^)
Good Attitude versus Bad Attitude

Anything can be taken from a man except the freedom of choice. However, that freedom is usually dictated by his attitude. A good attitude is a blessing. A bad attitude, on the other hand, spells trouble. A good attitude can build relationships while a bad attitude can ruin friendships, families, and communities. A good attitude can build a successful career, while a bad attitude will lead you nowhere. A good attitude surmounts problems and convert them into opportunities for personal growth, while a bad attitude whines and succumbs.

Fixing Our Attitude Problems

Attitude problems, especially ours, are too tricky and they go unnoticed and unchecked. We may find that eighty percent of our problems and miseries emanated from our attitude problems. So, what needs to be done? Fix them. By self-introspection. Self-analysis. Self-evaluation, or whatever you want to call it. We need to be resolute to find and fix those attitude problems before they wreak havoc in our lives. Weed them out before they choke you. Charles Swindoll said it best:
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.”
My take, and your take too, begin 2008 right by finding and fixing those attitude problems.

When was the last time you engaged yourself into a thorough self-evaluation? How do you identify your attitude problems? How do you fix them?

  2. Cognitive therapy is a powerful way to address and fix attitude problems. You are right, for attitude drives many facets of life and we naturally want to avoid those that are negative.
